Grimsby to play in Scandinavian League

By: Jon Mjedsson
Date: 01/04/2002

The Fishy has obtained information from Swedish newspaper "Polthea Thuan" that Grimsby Town may be invited to play in a new Scandinavian League.

An article in the local Malmo newspaper by Olaf Pir Flo suggests that some of the top clubs of Norway, Sweden, and Denmark, such as Brondby and Trelleborgs, are becoming increasingly concerned that their standard of football is becoming further and further apart from that of leagues such as the Premiership and Serie A. Therefore they are considering breaking away to form a Scandinavian League comprising the best few clubs from the Scandinavian leagues - AND - potentially some Nationwide and Scottish clubs.

It is believed that Rangers and Celtic could be tempted away from the SPL, and the new league could also approach some Nationwide clubs. Grimsby is mooted as a prime candidate due its "proximity to the Scandinavian land mass".

It is not known how UEFA may react to the formation of such a league, but it probable that the league would be given places in the Champions League and the UEFA Cup - giving the Mariners a real possibility of competing at the highest level alongside Bayern Muenchen, Real Madrid, and Manchester United.

So - away games might be a bit difficult to get to, but should Grimsby take part in this venture, it promises a higher standard of football at Blundell Park and later Great Coates - and let's face it - more money flowing into the club. We will await further developments!
