Reserves Pipped At The Post For Promotion

By: Richard Lord
Date: 07/04/2002

RESERVES coach Paul Wilkinson has admitted that his crop of young hopefuls have missed out on promotion to the Avon Insurance Premier League. The 1-0 defeat at Darlington left his side short on points with only two games to play - both away.

Of the defeat at Feethams, Wilko said: "It's a shame because it was the best we'd played all season but the ball just wouldn't go in the net. We did everything but score. It was one of those games."

He added: "Promotion is all but beyond us now, but you never know. If we'd have drawn against Darlington we'd be in with a shout of going up. It's still possible, but doubtful."

The Mariners Reserves travel to face Bury then York, but with Walsall being crowned champions in midweek, local rivals Scunthorpe look set to secure the second promotion place ahead of Grimsby.
