The Fishy - Grimsby Town FC

Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

On Sponsorship

I was thinking about our current situation on the cash front and about all the talk of going into administration.

Apart from feeling very down-hearted about this and realising that the club would have been financially better off by being relegated, which in itself is a sad case to hear, I wondered how we might escape this dreadful situation.

David Ross If I remember correctly Grimsby has one hell of a healthy businessman - David Ross (left) the man who owns the Carphone Warehouse - wasn't he born and bred in Grimsby? He was a self-made billionaire overnight when he floated on the stock exchange a couple of years back - I remember reading something about him in the newspaper. Could this man be the Al-Fayed of Grimsby?

The Question that needs to be asked is why haven't Grimsby Town Football Club approached him and asked for some financial support? Forget naming the New Stadium after a company that will give us £1million over 10 years - which really to be fair is peanuts in the football world - that's less than Beckham's quarterly income from Old Trafford. Why not name seek cash from this gentleman and name the ground after him? I'm sure that the Town fans would agree - this would be better in the long run.

I could probably answer this question as to why Grimsby Town FC have not done this. Mr Furneaux would feel frightened of losing his empire - his power and the glory he takes in keeping a small club in the First Division. He does not really care about the football club or the supporters - all he cares about is his prestige. Grimsby need money so go seek it. Where are all of these lottery winners - why don't they put a small cash injection into the club to help us out? I bet that they went to Wembley!

One way Grimsby could sort the players wages out is to reduce them to 50% of what they are on at the moment and bring in performance pay. By this I mean if they win double their wages (so that means they would be on what there were last season), if they draw give them 25% extra and if they lose they only get their normal weekly wage. The extra performance pay would be made up by full houses if we were to be in a really good position in the league and if the unthinkable ever did happen and we were to be promoted - promotion would more than cover the extra money.

D-Day On Thursday by Tony Hamilton

AFTER reading the events of the last few weeks at Blundell Park, I'm wondering what the directors have in mind to sort the current financial situation out. With 14 players under contract at the club, why don't they put them all on the transfer list, cause after all they wont take a pay cut to help the club?

But are any of them wanted by any other clubs, I doubt it cause after all they wouldn't be here playing (would they)? I'm Looking forward to Thursday, I'd like to be a fly on the wall at the board meeting , and after what's happened at Bradford City, that could be the course of action to help us. I wonder if there's a rescue package on the table to help the club through. But there's one thing I think people have forgotten about: who's going to show Nationwide footy next season, and would there be a contract in place for next season - if so why worry.
