Who will win League 2?

Groves Brings in Two Trialists

By: Paul Holmes
Date: 19/08/2002

GRIMSBY Town manager Paul Groves has today moved to strengthen his squad by bringing in two new faces on trial according to MarinersNet.

With a long-term injury to Steve Livingstone affecting the already small squad, Groves has brought in striker Chris Kiwomya and midfielder Sean Evers.

Both names should be familiar to Town fans. Kiwomya had a trial with the Mariners in a reserve game against Walsall in March whilst Evers was on trial at Blundell Park in the early days of the Lennie Lawrence era - Evers was due to play in a reserve game but the game was abandoned and returned to Reading

Kiwomya became a household name at Ipswich Town in the early 90's striking over 50 goals as the club gained promotion to the Premier League before moving to Arsenal in the same week as John Hartson, two signings later regarded as 'panic buys' by George Graham who left the club in disgrace not long after. The 33-year-old was unsuccessful with The Gunners and tried a move to France with Le Harve but that didn't work out either. Loftus Road and QPR were the next stopping points. Here Kiwomya enjoyed better times hitting 25 goals in 74 league starts.

In the summer of 2001 Kiwomya left the Shepherds Bush team for the Danish League and Aalborg before returning to England in March for his trial with Town.

24-year-old Evers is described as a skilful attacking midfielder. Having joined Luton as a YT, Evers went on to make over 100 appearances for The Hatters scoring 7 goals, one against The Mariners in the 2-2 draw in 1998, before joining Reading in 1999 for £500,000. His time at Reading was a disaster though making only 18 league appearances, 10 from the bench. In Autumn 2000 Evers looked to be on his way to join up with former Luton boss Lennie Lawrence at Blundell Park before the weather decided against it. Instead it was St Johnston on loan for a brief spell before moving on to new pastures at Plymouth after Reading released him.

At Plymouth, Evers made just 5 starts in over a year and for the final two months of last season was loaned out to non-league Stevenage before Plymouth released him.

Both Evers and Kiwomya will be out to impress and could feature in Wednesday's reserve game away to Scunthorpe.

Chris Kiwomya stats:

Height 5.10
Weight 10.12
Date of birth 02-12-1969

Sean Evers stats:

Height 5.10
Weight 9.07
Date of birth 10-10-1977
