Question of the Week

Who will win League 2?

Macca Issues Rallying Call

By: Richard Hubbert
Date: 17/09/2002

TOWN captain and record appearance holder John McDermott has thrown down the gauntlet to his team mates before this evening’s league encounter with Sheffield United.

The popular full back has urged his team mates to put the misery of loosing away to Coventry at the weekend behind them and look to the positive side that they scored two goals away from home. Town were robbed three minutes from time when Jay Bothroyd headed and 87th minute goal despite playing their best football all season.

In an interview with the Grimsby Evening Telegraph, Macca said "Even though we lost the lads have taken confidence from the defeat" and more pleasingly went on to say that "the determination that was running through the team was back from last year".

McDermott also praised the change in mentality and determination of the team on Saturday, a change that gives him confidence that Town have turned the corner. He was however, quick to point out that Town need to get something from tonight’s game and cannot afford to keep this winless run going.

"I don't see any reason why this can't be the first win. We've beaten them in the last two home games and us going to Sheffield and getting a result is well overdue.

"We've got to give them the respect they deserve but nothing more. We won't fear them and we've got to get it into our heads that we're capable of beating anybody in this League on our day."

"We proved that last year and it feels like that winning mentality is coming back. We had a bit of belief back on Saturday."

This restored belief in the Mariners ranks will be music to the Town’s fans ears. So far this season Town have lacked the grit and determination that kept them in this division last season, but some of that came back on Saturday and all Grimsby supporters will hope that it will continue and produce a result at Bramall Lane tonight.
