Furneaux Hits Out At The Grimsby Telegraph

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 30/03/2003

Chairman Peter Furneaux has criticised the Grimsby Telegraph over its handling of the John Oster transfer bid with the Telegraph maintaining that the story was factually correct.

The chairman claimed that the deal was not a free transfer, that talks had been 'ongoing' and that the club would have to pay an initial £25,000 for loan wages already subsidised by Sunderland, and then a minimal fee of £30,000 if Town stayed in the first division, which is what the GET said in their report.

"The club was actively engaged in talks and there was a failure by the Telegraph to check the facts with us," said Furneaux. "It is very difficult to give the details of a transfer without alerting other clubs in the market place."

"Everybody at the club is very upset with the way the matter was handled by the Telegraph. We had a written agreement on the fee and it is the player that has turned us down."END

Billo says:As it turns out, this is a "storm in a teacup" as Oster has now made the decision not to join the Mariners even though the club met his pay demands.

In defence of the Grimsby Telegraph, not that they need it, they have supported the club through the darkest of days by attempting to rally the fans and conducting a number of campaigns aimed at assisting the club.

From time to time differences do occur with sections of the media but Grimsby Town and the Grimsby Telegraph have enjoyed a very good and mutually beneficial relationship. It is unlikely that this particular 'blue' will sour that relationship.
