Michael Boulding Fans Piece

By: Richard Lord

A fan's view of former Grimsby Town player Michael Boulding, who looks back at his time at Blundelll Park and how he was perceived by the fans during that time.

Fans Piece

One of the best attributes Michael Boulding brought to the Town team was pace. His ability to accelerate and create chances from nothing made him a firm fans' favourite. It was a weapon that not many defenders could cope with and Boulding exploited that to the full.

Although he was only here for a season, he managed to establish himself as Town's top striker. The step-up in standard from Division Three to Division One might have proved tricky for some players but Boulding settled in almost unnoticed - before he started banging in the goals, that is!

Boulding had many fine games wearing the Black and White shirt. Arguably his best game came against Wimbledon at Blundell Park when he scored a hat-trick. The Mariners had won 1-0 at Wolves the previous weekend and they were expected to get something from the game against the Dons.

Grimsby were very slow out of the blocks and went 1-0 down before Boulding smashed in a fantastic volley to level the scores. Despite going 2-1 down, Town evened things up through Alan Pouton. It was 2-2 at half time but Town were lucky not to be behind.

The second half was a different story. Those 45 minutes were the best I have ever seen Town play. Firstly, Boulding was hauled down for a penalty that Pouton took and scored. Minutes later he won another penalty. This time the keeper got sent off and Pouton scored from a re-take. In the final few minutes Boulding scored from a breakaway and then completed his hat-trick following up from a shot parried away by their substitute keeper. It finished 6-2 and Boulding had a hand in five of the goals.
