Who will win League 2?

Wayne Burnett Fans Piece

A fan's view of former Grimsby Town player Wayne Burnett, who looks back at his time at Blundelll Park and how he was perceived by the fans during that time.

Fans Piece
Wayne Burnett arrived as an unknown quantity. Hardly a 'big' signing, he went on to become the pinnacle of Town's promotion push in 1998. I still remember his first Grimsby goal away at Scunthorpe in the Auto Windscreen Shield right in front of the Town support. He did himself no harm whatsoever sticking one past our rivals.

The next week he saved our bacon at home to Fulham by scoring a last-minute goal. Before long he was made a permanent signing for something like £100,000 and if he could reproduce the form he was showing while on loan, then Town had unearthed a bargain.

Burnett made things happen. He and Groves formed an effective midfield partnership and neither of them missed many games together. Burnett's true form shone through at Wembley where he scored the winning goal against Bournemouth and set up the winning goal against Northampton five weeks later.

What stood in Burnett's way was something a lot of Town players had come up against - injuries. The Town fans saw little of him the next season, and if truth be known, none of his previous form ever again. Comeback followed comeback and breakdown followed breakdown. Each return came too soon and the injury would take over once more.

When Burnett looked to have finally put the injury troubles behind him, he had the odd impressive game. In Groves' first game as manager Burnett put in a class performance against Portsmouth when Town won 3-1. However, Groves' preferred midfield partnership of Pouton and Coldicott closed the curtains on Burnett and so he left in the summer when his contract ended.
