Board Croweing with Delight

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 22/08/2003

GRIMSBY Town have raised over £70,000 so far in the club's summer share issue, which has helped the Mariners bring in an additional player (Jason Crowe) to the squad over and above the board's original budget.

"We're very, very pleased and we have to say a huge thank you to the fans who have contributed," Town chairman Peter Furneaux told the Grimsby Telegraph. "Jason Crowe was the player who wasn't in the budget and we've now got 26 players - he is the extra man we hadn't planned for."

"The shareholders have paid his wages for the first 12 months of his two-year contract and we're delighted."

Over two hundred new shareholders have come on board after the club released the remaining £363,000 share capital over the summer, of which over £290,000's worth still remain to be taken up.

Paul Groves has yet to sign Dutch striker Laurens Ten Heuvel, currently on loan from Sheffield United, on a permanent basis but if that deal goes through the board's pot will have run dry after seven new players were acquired over the summer, and a further nine put pen to paper on new contracts with Grimsby.

"The money from the shares has been spent. It's gone. It helped put the manager's wage budget up quite considerably," added Furneaux. "Season ticket sales are 600 down on last season but that drop is less than we expected."
