Town Lose To The Wendy's

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 16/10/2003

STUART Campbell failed from the penalty spot as Sheffield Wednesday gained a place in the next round of the LDV Vans Trophy drawing 1-1 with the Mariners but winning 5-4 on penalties.

Wednesday keeper Kevin Pressman, managed to block a weak shot from Campbell with his feet and then went on to score his penalty for the Wendy's.

Striker Darren Mansaram put Grimsby in the lead in less than 3 minutes but in the 72nd minute Adam Proudlock scored the equaliser forcing extra time and eventually penalties.

But Wednesday seemed to be in charge throughout the game missing a number of good chances.

Penalties

Grimsby: Barnard, Anderson Hamilton, Onuora, Campbell (saved)

Sheffield Wednesday: Haslam, Proudlock, Pressman, Holt, Barry Murphy

The Mariners would be disappointed to lose this game against Sheffield having been previous trophy winners with Sheffield making their first entry into this competition.
