"No disrespect to the likes of Grimsby..."

sunday 16th november

Gobsmacked

From This Is Lancashire

IT wasn't only the gaffer who was "gobsmacked" on Tuesday night and we, the players, are still trying to work out what happened at Grimsby.

It really was a horror show, a freak result and we all now just hope that has got it right out of the system.

The gaffer had us in watching a "video" nasty yesterday and it was not very pleasant.

I started the night on the bench and so watched the crazy first half and we all kept looking at each other and wondering what on earth was going on.

But all the time we kept thinking that we would win it, all the time we thought we were the better team. That is not meant as any disrespect to Grimsby but we have faith in our own abilities. We conceded an early goal, just as we did last season at Grimsby, but it was never like that match when they played like men possessed, fighting for survival.

When Managers Attack

From the BBC

Brian Laws v Ivano Bonetti

Bonetti was beloved of Grimsby fans for part-funding his transfer to the club from Serie A.

Sadly Mariners boss Laws did not feel quite the same level of affection towards the aged Italian, and reacted to a 3-2 defeat at Luton in February 1996 by throwing a plate of chicken wings at him instead.

Skilful footballer though he was, Bonetti was unable to shift himself out of the way, clocked the wings and plate full in the face and hit the deck with a fractured cheekbone.

Lennie Lawrence!

From the Grimsby Telegraph

"I wish them well and I can say hand on heart that I hope we're playing them next year.

"Without a doubt the bigger clubs are rising to the top and it's getting harder and harder for the likes of Grimsby.

"But they're all good players who have done it before and they always seem to pull just enough out of the hat at the right time. It's an amazing collective skill they have up there
