Macca Puts Off Operation

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 01/01/2004

JOHN McDermott is to delay having an operation on his hernia problem until the summer to avoid missing any games with the Mariners this season. The 34-year-old club captain and record appearance holder for Grimsby is set to play his 550th league game against Plymouth.

"I've had two or three before and I've always had to have them done. But I've always played through them and had them done at the end of the season. That's what I want this time around. It's not too serious at the moment. It's just after games when I can hardly walk", Macca told the Grimsby Telegraph.

"It's not pulling or anything so it's not concerning me too much. It's not too bad during games luckily enough. The first time I felt it was Peterborough away in the cup and I thought I was going to start having a problem. Luckily enough it's been getting easier in the games."

The club skipper, who has spent his entire career at Blundell Park, still has a year left after this season on his two year contract, after almost leaving the club and signing for neighbours Hull City in the summer.
