Question of the Week

Who will win League 2?

Fans' Reaction to Young's Depature

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 25/02/2005

GRIMSBY fans have reacted to the departure of Greg Young to Conference club Halifax this week on a free transfer. 22-year-old Young, who had been a professional at Blundell Park since 2002, has signed a 18-month contract with the West Yorkshire club.

Steve Johnson

Yet another young player is allowed to leave the club. How on earth will the club ever attract young promising players? What have they to look forward to if they join Grimsby? The odd appearance and then replaced by the next loan signing from the Conference, or from another struggling team.

The whole set up is providing players who have no commitment to the club. We have a manager whose place is in the Conference and some players who would be better in the Sunday league. There may be pain in the short term but for the long term get a manager who does not bring thugs to the club, believes in young players, and can respond during a match and not after to what is happening on the pitch. Groves may not have worked out but John McDermott with appropriate help might bring back pride to the club

From previous posts of mine, people should know I'm a big fan. I've only seen him 4 times and each time at centre half and every time he was the best defender on the pitch. He was another Handyside in the making and it is sad that we offload him while we have terrible players at the club such as Jones, Parkinson, and is he real Downey?

Who's paying Downey's wages, and wouldn't he be the obvious choice to offload as he has not even been on the pitch other than during the warm-up. We now only have 2 young players knocking at the door (North/Ashton) at the club now so I fear for the future (I've only seen Hockless as a sub so can't comment on him)/ Get rid of Slade at the end of the season; he will take us nowhere beyond mid-table obscurity

He's not the finished product but I always rated him, thought he looked promising for the long term and would put him ahead of a couple of other players that we are keeping.

He's not a great player, we've got better, more experienced defenders at the club. Why pay his wages when we don't need him and we can pick up somebody at least as good in the summer if we have to?
