Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Grimsby 0 Darlington 1

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 20/08/2005

TWO sendings off and two penalties awarded against them by Hull referee Carl Boyeson saw the Mariners' unbeaten run ended by bogey side Darlington at Blundell Park.

Grimsby had their best chances early in the game when Darlo 'keeper Sam Russell made a superb double save to deny Michael Reddy and later Paul Bolland.

But Darlington came into the game as the half progressed and should have scored before half time when a poor Gary Croft back pass was intercepted by Simon Johnson only for Steve Mildenhall to somehow deny him with a double save.

In the second half Darlington were awarded a harsh penalty against Tony Crane for impeding a Darlington player, which Town's man of the match Steve Mildenhall superbly saved from Wijnhard.

Darlo were given a second bite at the cherry when the diminutive Peacock skipped past a challenge into the box and appeared to be brought down by Newey, who was shown a second yellow card.

This time substitute Nsungu took the penalty, blasting it straight down the centre of the goal.

In the dying seconds of the game Tony Crane was shown a straight red card presumably for something he said to the referee, A vintage Tony Crane sending off.

Although Grimsby can berate the referee, who also sent two players off when Grimsby lost to Doncaster in the cup two years ago, they would have been fortunate to have held onto a point in this drab game.

A full report will appear later.
