Slade Pipped to Award

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 05/01/2006

RUSSELL Slade has once again been beaten to the League Two Manager of the Month award, this time by Carlisle boss Paul Simpson, who picked up the December prize. Slade also came second to Wycombe manager John Gorman back in September.

Carlisle were unbeaten during the month of December, whereas Town lost to Bristol Rovers and won their remaining four games in the month. The Cumbrians did however draw two games during December meaning they got 11 points to Town's 12, but the League Managers' Association decided Paul Simpson had just shaded it ahead of Slade. Macclesfield's Brian Horton came third of the three shortlisted managers.

Norwich's Nigel Worthington and Ronnie Moore of Oldham were the other two winners for December.

Kiss of Death Winners of the award are traditionally cursed. The last Grimsby manager to win the award was Lennie Lawrence (left) on 14th September 2001. Town promptly went 9 league games without a win, and Lawrence was sacked just over two months later!
