Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Who's Your Hero?!

September Player of the Month

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 07/10/2006

SEPTEMBER 2006 will not go down as the finest month in Grimsby Town's history, although there were some highlights: the 2-1 win over Walsall at Blundell Park, and two late goals which saw off struggling Chester.

The six players nominated by our readers for the September Player of the Month award, votes from which will count towards the eventual winner at the end of the season, are as follows:

Justin Whittle - Town's skipper was recalled to the starting line-up following Martin McIntosh's return to Huddersfield at the beginning of September and looked more solid alongside Nick Fenton than he had done at the start of the season.

Paul Bolland - Last year's Fishy Player of the Year always gives 100% and is probably still Grimsby's most consistent performer.

Phil Barnes - Barnes came under criticism from some quarters after his first few games for the Mariners, but put in some better performances during September, albeit not the consistency he will be looking for.

Isaiah Rankin - Town's pacy forward did everything but score during the month, but created chances and frequently caused opposition defences headaches before injury stopped his involvement near the end of the month.

Ciaran Toner - Hard-working midfielder who contributed a couple of important goals during September.

Nick Fenton One of the first names on Graham Rodger's team sheet, and the former Man City defender scored his first ever Grimsby goal against Hartlepool.
