Town Re-sign Three Players

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 19/04/2007

MIDFIELDER Ciaran Toner and club captain Justin Whittle have both agreed new contracts with the Mariners. Toner, who was out of contract in the summer, has agreed to a two-year deal whilst Whittle has turned down a job in Belgium to sign for another year.

The club have also exercised an option to sign a third player Midfielder Nick Hegarty for a further year.

Toner and Whittle have been two of Grimsby's best players this season, and Toner had been attracting the interests of other clubs, reportedly including Notts County. Toner and Whittle are currently placed 1 and 3 in our Player of the Season poll, the winner of which will be presented with a trophy at the club's awards night.

Signing the pair will hopefully indicate that the Mariners have ambitions to strengthen the team during the close season, starting with retaining their better players.

Next year will be Alan Buckley's first year and charge since his controversial third appointment as Grimsby boss, and no doubt he will use the summer to assemble his own squad for an assault of the promotion places next year.
