Beat the Bookies: Week 16

LAST week was a disaster for England, but quite the opposite for Grimsby who won both games! Did you take our advice to bet on "one of the greatest bets of modern times" last week, when we tipped Croatia to beat England? If you didn't you missed a great chance to clean up!

This week sees the FA Cup return once again, although it doesn't seem to have been long since it was here last. Round Two throws up some great chances for upsets with so many of the smaller teams having got through in the last round.

Burton Albion v Barnet8/5
Oxford Utd v Southend13/5
Staines Town v Peterborough4/1
Harrogate Railway v Mansfield4/1
Huddersfield v Grimsby5/1
Horsham v Swansea6/1
Notts County v Havant and Waterlooville6/1
Swindon v Forest Green11/2
Port Vale v Chasetown10/1

Sadly I promised not to bet on Grimsby to win in their match with Huddersfield. Town will be going into the game with a lot of confidence on the back of two wins and knowing that they have already comfortably beaten the Terriers this season. So normally we would be betting on Grimsby, but this week we can't as it is bad luck! Huddersfield are not work backing at 1/2 so which of the other matches could be upsets?

Last week's opponents Barnet had some good front players and I don't think 8/5 is great value, although Burton are probably the pick of the non-league sides are doing well in the Conference. Of the others Harrogate Railway have the added bonus of being on TV and Mansfield are having a poor season but have improved a bit lately. However 4/1 isn't overly generous.

Horsham are Staines are both doing well in the Ryman Premier but are up against two tough league sides in the form of League One leaders Swansea and big spending Peterborough from League Two respectively. If either of them manages a draw it will be a genuine surprise.

Of the remaining games Havant and Waterlooville of the Conference South have a day out at Notts County, who are struggling in League Two. That, in our opinion, represents the best chance of an FA Cup Upset.

Also of interest to Grimsby fans might be the odds on Danny North to score against Huddersfield. The in-form striker is 4/1 win bet365 to score at any point in the game.

Recommended Bets

  • 1. Havant and Waterlooville to beat Notts County (6/1, bet365).
