Town Swarm All Over Bees
By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 11/03/2008
ANY lingering fears of relegation were finally put to bed tonight as Grimsby soared past the magical 50 point mark with an impressive demolition of struggling Barnet at Blundell Park.
Injuries once again forced Alan Buckley to shuffle his pack and tonight he started with a new strike force of Jones and Butler. Ryan Bennett also came into the starting line up in place of Hunt, with Clarke moving into midfield.
Town made a promising start with Butler looking much more effective than when he first arrived and linking up well with Jones and the midfield. Hegarty and Butler both had chances, before Town got the goal their play deserved after 30 minutes. Hegarty burst into the box after playing a 1-2 with Butler, and slotted the ball past Harrison with some aplomb.
Just before half time Town added a second, Butler latching on to a ball headed down to him and, with an excellent piece of close control, turning and firing it past the Barnet keeper.
Bolland made it three a few minutes after the break when he dispossessed Nicolau then ran on and slotted the ball past Harrison.
Barnet caused a five minute scare when Akurang headed a reply with a towering header with 10 minutes to go.
But then man of the match Martin Butler set up substitute Taylor for a 1 on 1 with the keeper. The young striker made no mistake and restored Town's four goal cushion.
Town always seem to beat Barnet handsomely and they deserved this victory. With the teams immediately above them losing tonight the possibility that the season could have another twist is not yet beyond the realms of possibility. The next two fixtures, away at Darlington and Mansfield, will go a long way to deciding whether Town are playing for pride or a promotion place in the subsequent seven games.
A full report will appear later.
