Grimsby v Barnet

By: Alex Green
Date: 10/03/2008

NO rest for the wicked or mildly rude for that matter, Town face their fourth game in 11 days against a Barnet side still threatened with the chance of relegation.

The Opposition

Overview

With 39 points so far Barnet are just 9 points above a resurgent Mansfield and with others around them picking up their form the Bees really need the 3 games in hand they hold over the vast majority of teams around them. Paul Fairclough will be happy to move on from the previous handful of games of which 7 of the last 8 have been against promotion contenders. Though a 4-1 victory over Shrewsbury gave renewed hope, with only 7 points from a possible 30 it is a real time to worry for Barnet's league status. After a rush of hope in September propelled Barnet up towards the league leaders the rich vein of form was quickly distinguished by November with defeats to Shrewsbury, Bury and ourselves. Though the recent tough fixtures have been a worry there is hope as Barnet have to play many of the teams around them so their survival is well and truly in their hands.

The Team
The Barnet team has a continental feel to it. Yakubu, Carew, Grazioli, Akurang and St Aimie are all brilliant for Scrabble but on the pitch they have yet to impress. One of the high points for Barnet is the discovery of Jason Puncheon once of MK Dons. At 21 Puncheon is the leading scorer but luckily for us he was sent off during their last game against Peterborough so we won't be seeing him on Tuesday night. Defensively Barnet recorded their first clean sheet against Nott’s County since the 12th of January against MK Dons.

Key Player
Adam Birchall. Former Arsenal man Bichall is one of the best forwards Barnet can count on and with 48 league appearances since signing from Mansfield. After his short loan spell at the club before then Birchall has camped up at Adams Park when he was part of Wycombe’s squad in 2004. With 9 goals to his name this season even with new boy Puncheon out due to suspension Birchall will be the man Barnet count on for the fire power.
