Grimsby 2 Tranmere 0

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 13/08/2008

GRIMSBY defeated Tranmere Rovers in the first round of the Carling Cup last night. The Mariners rode their luck at times, with Tranmere striking the woodwork on three occasions, as well as gifting Grimsby an own goal. However in the end it was an excellent display and a well earned win for Town.

Town started brightly, but it was Tranmere who almost took the lead when Taylor hit the post on 14 mins.

Five minutes later James Hunt scored a rare goal, following up a Butler shot which rebounded to him after Achterberg parried the Town striker's shot.

Within a few minutes Tranmere hit the woodwork again, Curran's shot bouncing back off the bar from 20 yards.

On 30 mins Phil Barnes outstandingly tipped a shot by Curran over for a corner.

Just before half time the unmarked Sonko missed a clear chance from close range.

Just after the break Phil Barnes pushed a short range shot onto the woodwork.

Town were under pressure then broke away and Chorley could not avoid putting the ball in his own net.

Grimsby: Barnes, Stockdale, Heywood, Hope, Newey, Till, Hunt, Heslop, Llewellyn, Butler, Taylor

Tranmere: Achterberg, Antwi, Chorley, Kay, Taylor, Jennings, O'Callaghan, Barnett, Curran, Moore, Sonko
