Buckley Sacked!

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 15/09/2008

GRIMSBY manager Alan Buckley has been sacked with immediate effect. Saturday's 3-1 defeat to Chester was the final straw for the Town boss, who was in his third spell at Blundell Park. Assistant manager Stuart Watkiss has been appointed as caretaker while the board appoint a successor.

Grimsby have gone on a dismal run, not winning a league game for over six months.

Grimsby Chairman John Fenty writing in the his programme notes before Saturday's game said (clearly alluding to suggestions that Buckley should be sacked) that the club were not going to rush into rash decisions (or words to that effect). However Fenty must have had a change of heart following the dismal performance in the first half of the defeat to Chester.

Grim Rob Says Buckley could have been sacked at least twice in the past because of terrible losing sequences. However he has always managed to turn things around, but the bottom line is since his arrival Grimsby have never been anywhere near the play-offs, which has to be the aim of GTFC in this division. Watkiss, who has managerial experience, should now been given a few games to see what he can do. Personally I'd like to see a manager appointed with previous experience, not a former player like Macca with a blank CV.
