Transfer Round-Up

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 05/01/2009

GRIMSBY boss Mike Newell has his fingers in several pies as he tries to strengthen his squad during the month of January. Saturday's postponement means Newell has an extra week to source the players Town need to beat the drop before Grimsby play again.

Newell is looking to bring in players on several fronts:

  • He is trying to get Rob Atkinson on loan until the end of the season from Barnsley.
  • He is attempting to sign Darlington's Adam Proudlock and Oldham's JP Kalala, who are both of course currently on loan.
  • He is looking at signing Ipswich midfielder Liam Trotter permanently, if the Suffolk club are willing to release him.
  • It's also likely that Newell is looking to offload a couple of players in order to meet the league's salary cap, whereby each club can only spend a fixed percentage of its turnover on wages.
  • French midfielder Kevin Tunani has arrived on trial. The 21-year-old is a free agent with experience at Bordeaux, and would fit it well with Town's foreign legion if he's suitable.
  • Newell is also understood to be looking at at least one player from his former club Luton.
  • Town of course have two players yet to make their first team debut. One is left back Joe Widdowson, on loan from West Ham, would have started at Barnet. The second is French midfielder Mickael Buscher who impressed in a 4-1 victory for the reserves over Barnsley. Buscher was signed a few weeks ago, and has been working on his fitness ever since.
