Widdowson Joins Town

GRIMSBY have signed West Ham United left back Joe Widdowson as cover for a month. The 19-year-old is expected to start at Barnet after spending the day training with his new team mates.

Town Boss Mike Newell told the Grimsby Telegraph "We've signed Joe for a month because we don't know how long Tom's hamstring injury will drag on for. He's a left back and it's an area we haven't got any cover in at all after Tom Newey - with the exception of young lads who are untried."

Widdowson has never played for West Ham but last season spent a month on loan with Rotherham in League Two where he caught the attention of Town's management team.

"Both Brian (Stein, chief scout) and I have seen him and we knew he was available, " said Newell. "Joe has already been out at Rotherham and has been recommended by people we know as well and we're going to give him an opportunity, which is something I've never been afraid of."

With the transfer window now open Widdowson should soon be followed be some permanent signings, a fact acknowledge by Newell: "We have a list of players we would like to bring in and a list we would like as cover."
