Grimsby v Accrington Preview

By: Alex Green
Date: 10/04/2009

HAPPY Easter and what not everyone. A nice long four day weekend, lots of chocolate some second rate films which couldn’t quite make the Christmas scheduling - what could possibly ruin such a relaxing time. How about two crucial Town games threatening to worry hinder and make you cry if all goes wrong?

A point last Saturday was a truly brilliant result and that one solitary point could mean all the difference as the other clubs around us gained or increased their gap on us with results going their way. Nonetheless two vital games come up this weekend: first at home to Accrington and then finally at Meadow Lane as Town take on Notts County in front of hopefully one hell of a following from GY.

Their History...

Nestled between Burnley and Blackburn among the other 700 or so league clubs in the northwest. Accrington are most famous for that bloody milk advert which follows them round like fish puns do us. In 1968, 6 years after the original Accrington folded due to financial problems, the new improved Stanley awoke from a meeting in a men’s club, 2 years later Stanley are in the Lancaster Combination League ready to start the almighty climb to league status.

Last Season Was...

After 3 seasons in the league which Accrington have mainly spent bouncing around the bottom half of the table but without truly threatening relegation. Stanley finished one place behind our dismal campaign with the worst goal difference in the league with -34. Their only highlight of last year after going out in the first round of all cup competition was surprise, surprise tonking us 4-1 in September. Last season Accrington also experienced a few hammerings themselves most impressively was an 8 (eight) - 2 defeat away at rich boys Peterborough.

This Season Is...

Same old same old doing nothing special surviving and with a club with such low attendances and financial restraints is it all Accrington fans can hope for?

Grimsby Town To Them is...

A reminder of yesteryear really one of the clubs which has always been there floating happily between the leagues. Annoying the bigger clubs oh and hitting Alan Shearer in the gob!

They're Most Proud Of...

Being here really. It's being a long hard struggle to get here and we won’t let our league status go easily. I hope we can build on the community involvement and become a bigger family club. We have a lot of competition locally from bigger teams but hope we can offer something different to the bigger more financially driven clubs where the supporters aren’t as important.

The Future Is...

I hope a gradual progression upwards if we can capture the imagination of some new fans and youngsters who now have a league team in their town. We could easily average 3,000 and maybe more which would support us in League One then. Blackburn collapse and they come to us sick and tired of been treated like walking wallets.

Their Key Player Is...

20 year old Jimmy Ryan is on a right little hot streak 3 goals from the last 5 matches takes the former Shrewsbury’s midfielder total to 10 this year. A quick intelligent player he played in the 3-1 defeat just after Christmas proving a menace to Bennett and co. With a little bit of form behind him he needs to make sure to keep him locked away and keep this confidence in Town going!

Prediction...

Another huge crowd hopefully awaits what is becoming a brilliant home run. Winning our remaining home matches is essential and it continues against Stanley.
