Grimsby v Bournemouth Preview

By: Marc Reed
Date: 18/03/2010 (Last updated: 19/03/2010)

WE welcome promotion chasing Bournemouth to Blundell park this Saturday, for what will be an important game for both sides. Saturday also sees my return to Blundell Park for what will be an emotional day for me personally.

Who are they?

Their History

AFC. Bournemouth is an English football club currently playing in Football League Two. The club plays at Dean Court in Kings Park, Boscombe, Bournemouth, Dorset and have been in existence since 1899. Their name prior to 1971 was Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic, which was notable as the longest in the football league.

Last Season.

The team's future in the Football League was put into doubt before it even began play, when on 6 August—three days before the start of the season—the league threatened to block Bournemouth's participation in League Two, due to problems with the team's continuing administration and change in ownership. It ordered both Bournemouth and Rotherham United to demonstrate that they can fulfill all of their fixtures and find a way out of administration.

In the final home game of the 2009 season the Cherries guaranteed their Football League status by beating Grimsby Town. They finished their troubled season with their best away win for 30 years with a 4-0 victory at Morecambe. Because of their dip into administration they started on minus points but still managed to finish higher than us Mariners with a 21st place finish.

This Season.

This season Bournemouth are at completely the other side of the table, currently sitting in 2nd behind runaway leaders Rochdale with no real chance of winning League 2.

Brett Pitman has been on fire for ‘The Cherries’ this season, banging in 18 towards their promotion push. Danny Hollands has contributed a further 6 and club legend Steve Fletcher has scored 4.

Despite their excellent league position they were knocked out in the second round of The Football League Trophy, first round of The Carling Cup and the second round of the second round of The F.A. Cup

Biggest Hero Is…

Their biggest hero has to be Steve Fletcher, in two separate spells at Bournemouth, in total spanning over 17 years with over 500 appearances and over 100 goals.

Most Famous Player to Wear the Shirt.

Former Liverpool and England midfielder Jamie Redknapp started his career at Bournemouth.

His dad Harry was also manager at one point. Steve Claridge also turned out for The Cherries in the mid 80’s, but then again there are not many teams he has not played for.

Key Player...

Leading scorer Brett Pittman has to be a threat to us for as long as he is on the pitch, other players to look out for include Wales under 21 full back Rhoys Wiggins who is on loan from Norwich also former Scotland defender Warren Cummings is a bit useful in my opinion.

Town have a good record at home historically against the Cherries, but they have not beaten them since last century.
