Grimsby v Cambridge Preview

By: Alex Green
Date: 11/02/2011

I HOPE everyone enjoyed their week off because we welcome Cambridge United to the Park in expectation of 3 very valuable points.

  • Cambridge United
  • Founded: 1912
  • Position: 17th
  • Top Scorer: Daniel Wright (7)
  • Manager: Jez George (Caretaker)
  • Founded: 1912 (Abbey United)
  • Current Form: LLLLLL

    Their History

Founded as Abbey United in 1912 the club went by this name till 1951 two years after the club went professional. Elected to the league in 1970 over Bradford Park Avenue and managed their highest league position ever some 10 years later finishing 8th in Division 2. The club dropped sharply through the leagues in the early 90’s and while the club stabilised in the early 2000’s a further drop saw Cambridge dropping in to the Conference in 2005 with financial difficulties, which resulted in the selling of their Abbey Stadium

    This Season

Right now Cambridge fans can feel their season slipping away into horror. Currently manager-less and dropping fast through the league, with the worst form in the league. The main worry isn't now but in a few weeks time when all but 1 team below them has fulfilled their games in hand. Things had been looking up after an average start to the season in October the club managed 8 games without a defeat but after a 5-1 thumping to Mansfield Cambridge have struggled and now boast the worst recent form in the league.

    Key Player

After the departure of much wanted Robbie Willmott to Luton at the end of January, Cambridge have been searching in the dark for a nobleman ready to push them up the league and onto victory and though I would love that to be former Mariner Daryl Clare but it will be more likely the club will look to someone like Wayne Gray who’s joint scorer but no they released him so how about Daniel Wright? Danny Wright has scored steadily this season but has nearly collected as many yellow cards (5) as he has managed goals (7) but if I'm honest it’s all Cambridge seem to have up front. That or Daryl Clare but who’s ever heard of a former Mariner coming back to haunt us...

    Team News

  • Lee Ridley looks to be back fit again for The Mariners
  • Brian Saah, Paul Carden are a doubt for Cambridge and may well be ruled out along with Simon Russell, Jonathan Thorpe and card collector James Jenning who are all certain to miss.
