Town still looking for Mr Right

By: Rob Sedgwick

THE search for Grimsby's manager looks wide open, with the board still midway through the interview process and claiming not yet to have any short list. One person who has definitely ruled himself out is caretaker boss Dave Moore - other than that it is anyone's guess.

The bookies Victor Chandler have had at least five favourites for the position to succeed Neil Woods as the ninth manager since John Fenty became Chairman. Mark Cooper , Steve Burr. Gary Brabin, Martin Foyle and Justin Edinburgh are all said to have either ruled themselves out of the job, or not been allowed to speak to the Mariners.

John Fenty has said on a number of occasions that he is looking for a "conference expert", but if no suitable candidate emerges then the board may have to compromise for a manager with football league experience - or go for someone with no managerial experience.

No appointment is expected for at least a week - good news for the bookies.

Grim Rob Says: My money's on Gateshead's Ian Bogie, someone who has knowledge of this division and is doing well with a much smaller outfit than Grimsby up the coast. Blundell Park, despite the failures of recent years, would be a great opportunity for a young manager to make a name for himself, and be the next step up in the career for someone currently at a smaller Conference side.
