Who will win League 2?

Another Draw

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 28/03/2012

GRIMSBY's fading chances of promotion took another blow last night in a 1-1 draw at Tamworth. The Mariners briefly led 1-0 thanks to a goal from Ian Miller, but the lead lasted just six minutes. Both teams had chances to win the game, but the match dwindled to a disappointing draw.

It means Town have failed to beat Tamworth six times now despite starting favourites on virtually every occasion,

Hearn started for Mariners, back from his hamstring injury. Soares replaced Winn on the wide right and Elding came in for Duffy as Town went back to their familiar 4-4-2. Grimsby came out of the blocks very quickly - but their purple patch probably only lasted ten minutes. Townsend nearly scored on 20 mins when he made a great run, beating two men and shooting just wide.

Tamworth should have done better on 32 mins when they broke quickly and had men over but failed to get a shot on target.

Tamworth came into the game early in the second half, and McKeown had to be alert to keep the score goalless.

Coulson then took the ball off a defender who slipped, which brought him into a one-on-one with the 'keeper but shot straight at him.

A good touch by Hearn then brought himself into a one-on-one situation with the 'keeper but his shot hit the post and was cleared.

Town then scored a goal which was adjudged to have crossed the goalline. A Coulson corner was headed on by Miller, and Hearn got a touch on the line. Although the ball was cleared the officials ruled it had gone over the line.

Town were ahead for just 5 mins. Wood failed to clear the ball and Taylor nipped in to level the game.

Both sides could have won the game, which drifted to finish in a 1-1 draw.

Grimsby have six games left and probably need to win them all to have any hope of getting in the play-offs.
