Town Ease Into Quarters

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 12/01/2014

GRIMSBY proceeded to the last 8 of the FA Trophy with what initially looked to be a comfortable win. Leading 2-0 win over Skrill South side Maidenhead at the break, Town could have extended their lead but allowed the visitors to score after they stepped up their games in the second half.

Grimsby eventually made their way over the line, but not without some nervous moments.

Paul Hurst fielded a strong side with one of two names he might not have picked had it been a league game, but still one that was near to full strength, Second choice 'keeper Jonathan Hedge and FA Trophy specialist Dayle Southwell both began the game.

Town dominated the first half and finally took the lead on 35 minutes, when Colbeck was set up by John-Lewis and his shot went in off the 'keeper. Just before the break Pearson headed in a second from a cross by McLaughlin.

Maidenhead start the second half well and pulled one back after just 4 minutes when Tison-Lascaris fired in from 25 yards. Both sides have further chances to extend the scoring but in the end it was Town who did enough to ensure their name is in Monday's draw.

Town: Hedge - Bignot, Pearson, Doig Thomas - Colbeck, McLaughlin, Thanoj, Rodman - Southwell, John-Lewis

Subs: Hatton, Disley, Cook, Neilson, Walker.

In other fixtures Cambridge and Luton drew in the battle of the big guns and will replay in Tuesday night and North Bank outfit North Ferriby hammered Lincoln 4=0 away. Aldershot and Grimsby are currently the only confirmed top flight sides in the quarter finals, with Tamworth facing a tricky replay at Chorley.
