Town Lose Close Game

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 16/04/2014

GRIMSBY lost the promotion clash with Halifax, which meant Town also lost their third place spot to the Yorkshire side, who have won five away games on the trot and look very likely to be in the play-offs. Fortunately Braintree only drew with Tranmere which means Grimsby's fate is still in their own hands.

Andy Cook, Aswad Thomas and Joe Colbeck came in for Town, and Alex Rodman (illness) has to drop out.

It was to prove a game of very few chances to either side. Town had the first chance of the match when Tounkara was played through, but the 'keeper came out and blocked the shot. The visitors took the lead early in the second half when Maynard blasted a shot in with his left foot into the top corner.

On 68 mins Town made a double sub: Hannah and McLaughlin for Colbeck and Tounkara. But everything Town tried failed, and Tounkara's first half chance proved the only meaningful shot on target in the whole game.

Town take on Alfreton on Friday in a televised clash. Alfreton have not won for five games and have dropped well out of the promotion picture. Three points for the Mariners against Alfreton with Hyde to come at home on Monday would virtually seal Grimsby's position in the play-off places regardless of other results.
