Things Happen in Threes

GRIMSBY had to settle for a point at Alfreton in the big televised clash after a pulsating game and a day with more twists and turns than an Agatha Christie whodunit. Other results mean Town need 4 points from the remaining 2 games (Hyde at home, Braintree away) to ensure a play-off spot.
The match was delayed until 16:15 due to the team coach not having arrived because of a motorway accident. Eventually the bus got there and the players made their way through the stadium, and after warming up the match took place. Thanoj came in for the injured Disley and John-Lewis started up front in place of Tounkara.
Grimsby took a 7th minute lead when Hannah raced onto a long ball, beating the offside trap. His shot from a narrow angle should easily have been stopped by the Alfreton 'keeper, but he was wrong footed and inexplicably failed to intercept it.
Five mins later the 'keeper made a good save to deny a John-Lewis header. Alfreton equalised on 24 minutes when Town failed to clear a ball in the box and Law smashed it in.
After a good Alfreton spell Town once again took the lead when John-Lewis set up Hannah for his second, although he looked marginally offside.
Town continued to have the better possession and Alfreton had to clear a shot off the line in a goalmouth scramble in first half injury time.
Five minutes after the break Alfreton were back in the game when Sean Pearson gave away a penalty which Alfreton scored.
Grimsby had a strong passage of play and several corners, culminating in Pearson winning a penalty off Kempson. Hannah stepped up to score his hat trick.
A defensive cock-up by Town led to an Alfreton equaliser. Thomas headed the ball back and the defence stood still allowing Alfreton to nip in and score.
Things happen in 3's. The match was meant to kick off at 3, Town scored 3 goals, conceded 3 goals. Ross Hannah scored 3 goals. Town finished the day third place.
