Over to Newport

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 10/11/2019

GRIMSBY beat the weather to host their FA Cup tie with Newport but they could not beat the Welsh side and the game will go to a replay after a 1-1 draw.

Sam Russell replaced James McKeown in goal in a surprise change by Michael Jolley, and former Town favourite Padraig Amond started on the bench much to the relief of the Town faithful.

After a slow first quarter, another former Mariner Jamille Matt looked to have scored for Newport but his attempt was disallowed for offside.

Town scored when Tom King failed to hold on to a routine header by Waterfall and Town were fortunate to take the lead thanks to the goalkeeping mistake.

Newport hadn't really threatened but they stepped up a gear after the break and Amond came on an was unlucky not to score when his header hit the post.

Ahkeem Rose had a good chance to put Town further ahead but failed to react quickly enough from a breakaway opportunity and the ball was cleared. Rose then had another good chance but fired just wide from a Hanson assist.

With ten minutes to go, Jake Hessenthaler fouled an opponent on the edge of the box and the ref deemed in inside the area and pointed to the spot. With a sense of inevitability, Amond stepped up and scored.

Robson had a great chance to win it for Town in injury time but skied his effort.

Grimsby will be forced to head to Newport, in the third scheduled meeting between the sides in a short period (although the league game at Blundell Park next week has been postponed)

Town at least have the consolation of being in the hat for Round 2.
