Two More Matches Off

THE next two Grimsby fixtures have been officially postponed. There had been speculation that the matches might be back on, despite Town chairman Philip Day stating that the matches were under threat in a radio interview.
In a statement on the club's web site Grimsby have made the situation clear: "Following medical advice received from the EFL, our own medical team and in line with current Government guidelines, members of our first team playing and management staff continue to self-isolate due to a recent positive COVID-19 test being identified within the squad".
Bradford director Ryan Sparks had complained that City over the weekend had not been kept informed, but now with five days to go before the match was due to take place, the situation is resolved for once and for all and City can plan accordingly.
Town's match the following week against Hull City in the EFL Trophy is also cancelled. With Grimsby's Cheapside training ground closed for two weeks, the players are forced to train at home where they have to remain self-isolated. The closure was due to midfielder Jock Curran having tested positive for Covid-19 on Friday.
With cases rising across the country the EFL are going to have to tighten up the procedures around postponing games due to players having positive results. The EFL clubs are unable to afford the sort of regular testing used at the top end of the game, so long periods of self-isolation for squads could become more common in weeks to come. The confusion over this match and the Stevenage/Bradford fixture at the weekend highlights the lack of leadership from the football authorities.
