Town Grind Out a Win

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 04/11/2020

GRIMSBY ground out a 1-0 win in a game where they initially dominated, went a goal up in a quiet spell, then spent much of the remainder of the game in defensive mode.

The Mariners will be pleased with a second successive clean sheet, which is a big help when you are not scoring many at the other end.

Harry Clifton, Max Wright and Montel Gibson came into the starting line-up in place of Danny Preston, Matt Green and James Tilley.

Town had the better of the early changes and Wright missed a sitter with a free header wide from Hendry's cross. The Mariners gradually ran out of steam but finally broke the deadlock when Wright put in a perfect cross which Gibson slotted in.

With their noses in front, Grimsby gradually sat back and Barrow started to dominate possession. The away side had a shot from Reid which went past McKeown and bounced off the inside of the post back into the 'keeper's hands. Barrow then looked certain to score when Reid was picked out in the size yard box, but Pollock miraculously popped up to intercept the ball into touch.

In the closing stages, McKeown got booked for timewasting and the ref played 6 mins instead of the regulation 4. But the full-time whistle sounded to confirm a welcome three points.

Town take a break from league action when they face Dagenham away in the cup at the weekend. Last year the Mariners won the first two rounds to earn a tie at Chelsea, so they will be looking to get into the hat with a chance to do the same. This season there are no replays so the match will be settled in East London on the day.
