Eight Defeats on the Trot Away

GRIMSBY lost again in another narrow away defeat, this time at Wrexham. Former Town striker, Ollie Palmer, scored a first-half winner in what was his debut for the Welsh side.

Paul Hurst made two changes, bringing in Crookes for Amos in defence and Sousa in place of the injured Maguire-Drew.

Town started strongly and McAtee had an early chance but his shot from a narrow angle was saved. For the home side, a Hall-Johnson cross found McAlinden whose shot was saved by Crocombe.

Wrexham should have scored when Crocombe was caught out by a Tozer throw, Hayden had the chance to head the ball into an open net, but his effort went just wide.

The Red Dragons though eventually took the lead. A free kick from defence fell to Mullin which Crocombe saved but Palmer was first to react, to score on his debut from the rebound.

Wrexham pilled on the pressure early in the second half and Grimsby had to defend solidly to maintain the deficit of one goal, with Crocombe helping to keep Town in it. The Mariners gradually came into the game with McAtee usually the dangerman, and Pearson came close with a header from a corner.

Abrahams just failed to make contact with a loose ball from a McAtee cross, when any touch would probably have been a goal, but Wrexham always looked a threat on the break as Town committed more players forwards.

In the end, it was the usual story of not many chances, and with one goal usually enough to beat Grimsby, it makes it very easy for oppositions to play the Mariners as they can defend at will and pick Grimsby off at the other end.

With defeat after defeat making the play-offs look a distant prospect, attention is turning to manager Paul Hurst, who will need positive results fast if he is to keep his job much longer.
