GRIMSBY secured their play-off spot with a game to spare thanks to a 1-0 win over Boreham Wood in the season's penultimate and much-delayed game. John McAtee scored the game's only goal after a return from a shoulder injury, and he could have had more.

The other changes were Shaun Pearson and Erico Sousa who replaced Luke Waterfall (suspended) and Sean Scannell (injured).

Crocombe had to make an early save, but Town looked the more likely to score and McAtee pounced on a mistake and raced on goal, skilfully stroking the ball past the keeper for a composed finish. The Town striker could have had a second with another chance but this time Ashmore denied McAtee.

Town continued to look the more dangerous, but the narrow lead was always concerning. A defence-splitting pass saw Boden clean through but Crocombe made a save with his legs to keep the Mariners in the ascendancy

Holohan had a chance where he tried to lob the 'keeper and Clifton should have scored when his header was saved from close range, but in the end they had to settle for a 1-0 win.

Grimsby look most likely to play Notts County at Meadow Lane in the first National League play-off eliminator on May 25.

It is a big achievement for Paul Hurst, and his fifth consecutive appearance in the play-offs at this level, as his last four seasons in the National League in his first spell all ended in the top 5. The format has changed since so there are two more playoff spots and home advantage to the higher-placed side. This means Grimsby would have to win three matches away from Blundell Park to get promoted, a tall order, but one they will relish to regain their precious Football League place for the second time.
