Maher Rescues Injury Time Point

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 19/11/2022

GRIMSBY rescued a point with a Niall Maher injury-time goal against Stevenage at Blundell Park to end their run of three consecutive league defeats.

It was the least Town deserved after missing a first-half McAtee penalty and then Otis Khan was desperately unlucky when his attempt hit the inside of the post not long after McAtee's miss.

Town switched to a bake three and four changes were made from the Doncaster line-up. McAtee, Maher, Amos and Green started with Glennon, Hunt, Holohan and Kiernan making way.

The early part of the game saw lots of stoppages for free kicks, with the referee awarding Stevenage more than their fair share. Stevenage could have scored when the bounce from a long throw-in deceived Efete but fortunately, Clark poked the ball wide of Crocombe. Wing backs Efete and Amos then both had chances that they failed to take.

Grimsby were given a golden chance when Clifton was brought down in the box and the ref awarded a clear penalty. McAtee's effort though was poor and weak and the keeper easily saved it. The Town striker almost made amends though when he set up Khan soon afterwards, but the winger's strike bounced off the inside of the post and was cleared.

The Mariners looked the more likely to score but it was the visitors who went ahead when Reeves was given the space to fire a cross in.

It looked like it wasn't going to be Grimsby's day but yet again a late corner proved their salvation. Maher hooked in a scrappy goal in front of the Pontoon to rescue a deserved point against an in-form Stevenage side.

Town's league home form is poor, but they have another cup match next when Accrington visit Blundell Park in the EFL Trophy, before the weekend's big match in Round 2 of the FA Cup at Cambridge.
