Grimsby to face Burton in the FA Cup

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 28/11/2022

GRIMSBY will continue their run of games against League One sides when they face Burton Albion at home in the FA Cup 3rd round. The Mariners have already beaten Plymouth, and Cambridge in the FA Cup and have also faced Derby and Accrington Stanley in the EFL Trophy.

Burton are currently struggling near the foot of League One and the tie represents a realistic possibility of progressing to the next round and potentially drawing the big fish many fans had been hoping for today. The winner will also receive over £100K in prize money. If necessary, the match will go to a replay, which would be at Burton's ground, the scene of Grimsby's notorious relegation from League Two in the final game of 2010.

The Mariners haven't reached Round 4 since January 2000 when they lost 2-0 at Bolton, although they entered the competition in Round 3 that year as they were in Division 1 as it was known then (now the Championship).

The draw saw several high-profile clubs pitted against one another, making it likely that a few big names will be eliminated and paving the way for smaller sides to progress deep into the tournament helped by relatively easy opposition along the way.
