Another Draw

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 26/08/2023

GRIMSBY conceded a late goal at Walsall which cancelled out Abo Eisa's second-half goal, and meant the Mariners had to settle for another draw. A late sending-off for Hussey gave Town a man advantage in the closing minutes but they were not able to take advantage.

Paul Hurst made two changes with Maher and Vernam replacing Waterfall and Gnahoua, who reverted to the bench.

Walsall started the stronger side and had several chances to take the lead through a combination of Tierney's profligacy and Eastwood's saves. Eastwood also deflected a Knowles shot onto the bar as the home side dominated.

Eastwood's saves had kept Town in the game and halftime gave them an opportunity to reassess their approach.

Town improved after the break and scored with their first attempt of note - another long-range effort from Eisa who almost added a second with a shot from a free kick tapped to him which grazed the crossbar. Grimsby looked like they needed a second and their best chance came from Rose's header which was deflected over the bar by the 'keeper.

With 10 minutes to go a Tierney shot landed at the feet of Stirk who reacted quickest to turn and shoot past Eastwood.

Hussey received a second booking in injury time but there wasn't enough time for the extra man to count and Grimsby had to settle for a point.

Town have had a tough start to the campaign, but have only lost once. Grimsby's next league challenge is another tough one when they face second place Gillingham. After that there are two away matches at Bradford and Wrexham, both sides tipped to challenge. The Mariners are facing some of their most difficult fixtures in their first few games, and the league table needs to be given time to take shape.
