That Sinking Feeling

A POOR performance at Barrow continued Grimsby's winless 2025 which has now seen two draws and three defeats. The Mariners created virtually nothing all match despite having the bulk of the possession and ended up a well-beaten 0-3.

Barrow were happy to let Town have the ball, content to take their time and pick Town off when they had the opportunity, which Grimsby's generous defence would inevitably grant them from time to time.

The first half was dire, with Town having most of the possession but creating very little. The deadlock was broken, in the first chance of the entire half, five minutes before the break when a ball from the right cut through Town's defence and found Gotts who fired past Wright with his left foot.

Hume was forced off injured early in the second half and Carson came on in his place. The sub's first act was a clumsy challenge to concede a penalty. Wright did well to paw away the spot kick, diving low to his right, but any lift was soon undone when a poor clearance from Town saw the ball played straight back and the ball was flicked on into the path of Smith who bundled it in from close range to make the score 0-2.

Barrow added a third to finish Town off from a corner, with the marking non-existent. Town rallied slightly with the introduction of Rose and Vernam but failed to break their duck as the game fizzled to a conclusion.

It was a terrible Grimsby display against a Barrow side who were out of form going into the game, albeit now under new management. Town's league position is still creditable but their recent form and downward momentum is worrying. We have the worrying combination of not scoring enough and conceding too many. Tuesday night's game against Gillingham Blundell Park is another opportunity against out-of-form opponents (as was today).

Town: Wright, Cass, Hume (Carson), Rodgers, McJannet, McEachran (Rose), Khouri, Luker (Thompson), Green, Svanporsson (Vernam), Obikwu
