Town Turrn It Around

GRIMSBY managed to come from behind and take three points from a league game for the first time this season. The Mariners succumbed to an early Sam Lavelle goal from a corner but fought back with two goals after the break.

McEachran replaced Thompson in midfield in the only change from the win at Bromley, and Town continued with 2 up front.

Carlisle, in Mark Hughes's first game as boss, started well and got an early lead when ex-Town loanee Embleton's corner was glanced into the net by Lavelle after just five minutes.

Town stepped up and increasingly dominated the first half, creating several chances and playing some good football. The Mariners did manage to get the ball into the net when Obikwu scored after a rebound from a Rose shot but was deemed offside. Some great footwork by Svanthorsson near the end of the half saw the Icelander nearly score after the young keeper fumbled his strike.

Despite the Grimsby domination, Carlise almost went 2-0 up at the start of the second half when a Harris shot struck the post and the rebound came back out and the ensuing shot was blocked by Rodger, with appeals for a handball by the Town defender. Some refs might have given it.

Town though continued to dominate the game and Rodger has a chance at the other end when the ball broke to him in unfamiliar territory and he rushed his shot when better options were available.

Grimsby finally equalised a goal which had been coming, after good work by Hume and Khouri found Obikwu. The Coventry loanee swivelled to give himself a shooting angle and blasted the equaliser in.

Green then had a shot saved and Obikwu could have scored the winner. However, the pressure finally told when a short corner led to Svanthorsson being brought down in the box and Rose stepped up to score from the spot. Breeze made a double save to deny first Vernam and then Rose as Grimsby pressed for the killer third goal, which in the end they did not need.

It was a good performance from Town, with Svanthorsson the stand-out player, and to recover from a poor start was encouraging after so many game where Grimsby has failed to come back after going a goal down. The 3 points moves them once again within a win of the play-off spots, with everything still to play for.
