Jeffrey Signs 2 year deal

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 10/08/2000

Lee Peacock (pictured), one of Alan Buckley's summer targets for a replacement for striker Lee Ashcroft has been signed by Division Two side Bristol City for £600K today. But the good news is that Michael Jeffrey has signed a 2 year contract with the Mariners.

Buckley, who admits to being priced out of signing the players he would like, with only around £350K available to him from the proceeds of the Ashcroft transfer to Wigan last week, had just 2 days left before the new season started to find a new striker. Buckley's funds look to have been insufficient to secure the services of Peacock and quality strikers available at the Grimsby manager's target price look few and far between in today's UK transfer market.

Trialist Michael Jeffrey from Kilmarnock however signed a two year contract with the Mariners today.

He has been on trial with the Mariners for the last two weeks and has played in four pre-season games.

Although he was short of match fitness when he first arrived his improvement persuaded Town boss Alan Buckley that he was worth a permanent contract.

"We're delighted to have him on board. He suits our style of play and he will go straight into the squad for Saturday," said Buckley today.
