Reserves Draw with Scunny

By: Nick Osborne
Date: 01/11/2000

Town started the reserve game at Blundell Park this afternoon full of beans, and the tempo of the game was played quite fast by both sides. The first real chance of the game fell to the Mariners after about 8 minutes with a shot being cleared off the line.

End-to-end stuff then ensued till the 19th minute when a shot from outside the box was deflected out wide to Chapman who sort of lobbed the keeper. In stepped BURNETT to head home from two yards out into an empty net. To be fair, it was going in anyway but Wayne just made sure. The game continued to flow without either team finding the back of the net. The highlight was a Clare shot from the edge of the box which the Scunthorpe keeper had to dive to his right to make a good save.

2nd half

It started a bit slower than the first half, though I didn't really expect either team to be able to keep up the pace. Town spent most of the first 10 minutes of the 2nd period in the Scunthorpe half without producing any real goal scoring chances.

Scunthorpe seemed to pick up a bit after they made a double substitution. This resulted in MORRISON getting the equaliser for the visitors after 30 minutes of the 2nd half. The goal came after the Town defence seemed to stand back off the Scunthorpe forward who, thankful for being given the time, unleashed a terrific right foot shot from just inside the box which screamed into the net.It was a bloody good goal to see.

This spurred the visitors on a bit,and took over for the next 5 minutes or so,in which they hit the post, but anything else was easily dealt with by the Town defence.

Final score: Town 1 Scunthorpe 1.

Remarks:

Burnett had another good game on his come-back trail, I don't think it will be long before he makes the first team again.

Croudson had a decent game between the sticks (he had no chance with the goal)

No sign of R.Smith, who appears to be carrying some sort of hip injury.

Also, as I predicted earlier in the day, there were no foreign trialists taking part in the game.
