Is football a business or a sport?

Andy Tillson Interview

By: Dan Humphrey
Date: 04/04/2001

As part of the 'Slipped Through The Net' series, The Fishy asked Andy Tillson, the former Grimsby Town centre back a few questions. Tilson left Town in 1988 and went on to play for QPR, Bristol Rovers and currently is a regular first teamer with 2nd division Walsall.

Andy Tillson

Fishy:
have you any regrets about your career?

Andy:
Lots of things happen during any career which you might want to change, but in general I've been lucky with choosing good clubs to play for and enjoyed it very much.

Fishy:
Did you enjoy your time at Grimsby? Did you perhaps leave too soon?

Andy:
Grimsby being my first pro-club, probably 2 and a half years wasn't long enough to learn enough about the pro-game and feel by staying another year or two wouldn't have harmed my learning process.

Fishy:
Was Alan Buckley the biggest influence in your career, taking you from Kettering to Grimsby?

Andy:
Yes, Alan Buckley was a big influence on my career, taking me from Kettering and giving me the opportunity of pro-football, and teaching me to play in the right manner by passing the ball as all Alan's teams do.

Fishy:
Do you keep in touch with ex-Town teammates?

Andy:
Yes, obviously now Mark Lever has moved to Bristol, we speak regularly. I also keep in contact with John McDermott and still see many of the other lads on the football circuit.

Fishy:
Will Walsall get promoted and join Town in Division One?

Andy:
I very much hope so. We have been in the top 2 or 3 all season and given ourselves a great chance and I hope we can finish> the job off. We have a good squad of players and a good team spirit (but you never know in football).

Our thanks go to Andy Tillson and Wallsall for this interview.
