Grimsby Town went down 4-1 to promotion-chasing Blackburn this evening at Blundell Park. In front of the Sky TV cameras, the Mariners were looking to bounce back from the disappointing home defeat to Sheff Utd, but the Lancashire side proved tough opposition. Coyne began in goal, with the same back four from Saturday. Butterfield, Pouton and Campbell played across the middle, with Donovan in behind the front two paring of Livingstone and Cornwall.
The first 20 minutes were very open, with Town having the better of what chances were created. Livingstone turned well and shot at the keeper, and Gallimore's free kick was nervously tipped around the post by Friedel.
Soon after, Rovers made their way down the pitch and Dunn shot from the edge of the area, and caught Coyne in two minds, and the ball squeezed through the Welshman's hands to let Blackburn in the lead. A cruel blow to a goalkeeper who has been outstanding for most of the season.
Minutes before the interval, and unmarked Berkovic headed Rovers into a 2-0 lead. A superb tackle by Handyside only set up for the cross to reach the Israeli and Blackburn were heading for three points.
Soon into the second half, Blackburn made it three when Jansen netted to send the away fans wild. Town responded well, and enjoyed plenty of possession until they got what they deserved. A Pouton cross was headed back by Livingstone to Cornwall, who somehow managed to turn and shoot to find a way back in the match for the Mariners.
Town kept up the pressure for another 10 minutes until the game was effectively put out of reach when Blackburn scored off the break. Jansen nipped in at the far post to steer home the fourth.
The scoreline was not a true reflection of the pattern of football, with Grimsby dominating at times. Lennie Lawrence can be satisfied with his team's effort and may feel the scoreline was an injustice.
