Graham Howes reports that in the Yorkshire Post an article by Matt Donlan says, "Grimsby Town has been linked to sign Ossett Albion's highly gifted young midfielder Steve Downes."

Manager Eric Gilchrist of Northern Counties League side said " I don't think he will be with us too long. He is a cracking young player and a real prospect."

Dan Humphrey comments:

Following a posting on our message board re Tony Thorpe, I got this from Bristol City rivals net site:

"But according to Wilson that only goes some way towards the necessary reductions, and the Ashton Gate boss conceded "I'm hoping we won't have to sell one of the first team because you want to keep your better players together, but if someone comes in with a big bid for one of our players it will have to be considered." 'I'm hoping we won't have to sell one of the first team"

That assessment will add to speculation that top-scorer Tony Thorpe, who finished the final weeks of the season on the substitutes bench, may be sold to generate money for strengthening the side.

Wether Town could afford his transfer fee and wages is another matter. Mind you, I hear that Danny C is on a fair amount, and perhaps Lennie has the cash to get one or two high paid players in - Campbell plus A.N.Other??!!

Graham Howes also reports on the problem facing clubs regarding the pension scheme for managers, players and staff

It has been announced that 94 league and non-league clubs face bills to top up a shortfall of £13m pounds. Liverpool is facing a request of just over £3m. Clubs are going to be allowed to pay their contribution in monthly payments for the next six years.

It has not been revealed how much the Mariners have to pay if involved. It all depends on the clubs involvement with some clubs like Rochdale being asked for a few hundred pounds but Oldham Athletic is facing a 150K bill. One thing is certain with so many clubs in a financial struggle this is an unwanted blow to them.

The scheme set up in 1977, was to help managers, coaching staff and office staff after retirement.
