Is football a business or a sport?

The Next Move?

By: Nick Osborne
Date: 26/08/2001

AS TOWN FANS we are all desperately awaiting news of the new stadium. But when will it come? After the last round of voting, in which the plans for outline planning permission were passed by NELC, we are still waiting for the powers that be to deliberate.

The wait is almost over, or so we are lead to believe.

After the plans were passed, the then Vice Chairman of the club, Bryan Huxford, was quoted as saying 'a spade wont be turned until September at the earliest'.

With September fast approaching and no news so far, what is actually happening? Will a decision ever be made or will we be kept waiting until Christmas or beyond?

Is it a good thing that the 'jury' is still out or does it mean the decision won't go our way?

Whatever the outcome, we can be assured that the Great Coates Civic Society will do all in their power to either stop or prolong the issue. If it goes our way what's their next move? Will they concede or do they have plans in place to delay it even further?

Whatever the outcome, what do the developers think about the delay?

How long will the developers, Chiltern Investments, stay waiting in the wings waiting for the right decision? Undoubtedly, they have already invested a lot of time and money into the project and will want a return on their investment in the shape of the non food retail side of the project.

If for instance, we are left waiting or delayed by the Great Coates Civic Society for say another year, will Chiltern Investments still be around? These type of companies have been known to pull the plug and cut their losses. If this were to happen to us, could we blame them? As a business venture it might make sense to them. On the other hand, have they already invested so much time and money that they are past the point of no return and will stay around forever waiting for a decision.

Whatever the outcome, we the fans, and indeed the club, are now ready and waiting for a decision. It's been a long wait for all parties concerned, lets hope its the right decision when it eventually arrives.
