Kevin Donovan Returns To Blundell Park Tomorrow

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 31/08/2001

GRIMSBY TOWN could go to the top of the table with a win over Barnsley tomorrow. Not since 1982 have the Mariners seen such heady heights and it would be a real tonic for Town fans to see their team riding high!

Because of international commitments, Towns game is the only first division fixture but on Sunday Bradford will play Burnley and whoever wins that will go top of the table. To the Grimsby Telegraph, Lennie Lawrence said: "Wouldn't that be nice, if only for 24 hours."

"It would be a real achievement bearing in mind the difference there is between the first division now and 20 years ago. The standards are higher but the biggest change is in the resources available."

There are doubts about striker Jonny Rowan, Alan Pouton and David Beharall. Rowan was injured in training yesterday and it could be a late decision as to whether he or Michael Jeffrey partners Phil Jevons. Pouton picked up a calf injury at Portsmouth while Beharall quit training after feeling a twinge behind his knee.

"We have these problems but on the credit side Wayne Burnett and Bradley Allen both got through 90 minutes for the reserves so they will be in the squad," said Lawrence.

"There will be an inquest about what happened at Portsmouth, but not yet. The important thing is to look forward. It was Portsmouth's day on Monday but we must focus on Barnsley."

Kevin Donovan

"Kevin is a great pro, a talented player and a good lad. We could not match what he was being offered but that is how it is for a club of our size in these Bosman days."

"He and we knew he was going for six weeks, but he still put in the maximum effort right to the last minute of the last game. I will always hold him in the highest regard and I hope the fans give him a good reception."
