IT'S NOW just one defeat in nine matches as Grimsby's good start to the season continued with a hard-fought 0-0 draw at Blundell Park against Notts Forest this afternoon. Both sides had chances to win it, but both teams had to settle for a point in the end.
It was also a day when Jack Lester returned to Blundell Park and he was included in the starting eleven.
Grimsby began the game with the wind behind them kicking towards the away fans in the Osmond stand. Chances were few and far between and the Mariners struggled to fashion any sort of possibility to open the scoring. Forest however looked impressive on the ball and dominated the midfield. They were unlucky not to go into the break with at least a goal lead.
Danny Coyne made two vital saves in the first half, one was an effort from Lester which Coyne saved with his legs, and the other was an impressive low save to his left to deny Stern John.
In the second half the Mariners came out looking far more confident and looked good going forward. They managed to create two or three excellent chances to take the lead, but each time the luck favoured Forest. After good play down the right between McDermott, Burnett and Butterfield, the right-back advanced in the area to drill the ball across the Rowan who missed an open goal from 7 yards.
Minutes later an over-hit cross by Burnett was misjudged by Forest keeper Ward and Pouton's shot across the goal hit Butterfield who was desperately trying to get out of the way. Forest could have taken the lead but the linesman came to the home fans' rescue as John's effort was ruled offside.
Butterfield saw his low effort parried away brilliantly by Ward as the game flowed from one end to the other. Right at the end Forest applied more pressure, but a more even second half finished with Grimsby gratefully accepting the point after Forest provided them with their stiffest home test yet.
